Federal Judge Strikes Down Gov. Lee’s Transgender Bathroom Signage Law

A Federal Judge on Tuesday struck down a law signed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee in 2021 that required businesses to post signs if they allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice. Businesses had sued over the law, arguing the signs would violate their First Amendment rights by compelling them to communicate language they find offensive. Governor Lee’s law also required government-owned facilities to post such signs on public bathrooms.
