An investigation is underway after a carnival worker died in an accident Thursday morning (7/6/23) at the Smith County Fairgrounds. WTVF has identified the victim as 45-year-old Oval Lee Mudd. According to the Smith County Fair, Mr. Mudd was working for James Gang Amusement Company LLC of Andalusia, Alabama. The amusement company said the newly hired employee was servicing the “Gravitron” Carnival Ride during routine weekly maintenance when the deadly accident occurred. They did not say exactly what happened or release any other details on the circumstances of Mr. Mudd’s death. The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development initiated an investigation and a third-party inspector concluded Friday morning that there were no operational issues and the “Gravitron” was allowed to resume business. The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to complete its investigation in 6 to 8 weeks. The Smith County Fair wrapped up on Saturday (7/8/23).
