An 80-year-old Crossville woman has lost $700 in a gift card scam. Crossville Police responded to a call Friday from the woman’s daughter who said she thought her mother was being scammed. At the time of the call, the mother was at Walgreens purchasing gift cards as instructed by someone on the phone. Police made contact with the woman who said she had been speaking on the phone with a man who claimed to be from New York who told her that if she bought him gift cards, he would fly to Tennessee and giver her $1 million. Police told her to stop buying gift cards. Police learned that she had already purchased $700 worth of Amazon and pre-paid Discover cards and given the subject the numbers. Please warn your elderly relatives that anytime anyone asks them to purchase gift cards or make any other unusual transactions, it is always a scam.
