Crossville Mayor RJ Crawford, during the regular session of the Crossville City Council, made a proclamation naming September 29th as First Sergeant Milo Lemert Day in Crossville. Lemert, a resident of Crossville, enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1917 and was deployed in March 1918 to Europe during World War I. On September 29, 1918, Sergeant Lemert reorganized his unit after all officers had been killed, and singlehandedly led his company to attack at the Hindenburg Line which resulted in the neutralization of four machine gun emplacements. Sergeant Lemert was fatally wounded in the attack and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
