At Monday night’s meeting, Cumberland County Commissioners, as petitioned by American Legion Post 163, unanimously approved a Resolution proclaiming September 29 of each year as First Sergeant Milo Lemert Day. First Sergeant Lemert, a resident of Cumberland County, was deployed to France during World War I.  On September 29, 1918, he led his heavily wounded company to attack the enemy with hand grenades at the Hindenburg Line, resulting in the destruction of all enemy soldiers and four machine gun emplacements. Despite his courageous actions, First Sergeant Lemert was killed by enemy fire during the attack. He was laid to rest at Crossville City Cemetery.  In 1991, the Cumberland County Commission renamed the Cumberland County Courthouse Annex #3 the ‘Milo Lemert Memorial Building’. And now, September 29 of each year is to be proclaimed as ‘First Sergeant Milo Lemert Day,’ and the day is to “be observed with appropriate activities, and the acknowledgment of the honor and recognition that First Sergeant Milo Lemert brings to Cumberland County.”
