Captain Fred Sherrill with the Fairfield Glade Police Department reports Cumberland County had at least 6 different deer vs. vehicle accidents on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

AAA offers the following tips to avoid animal-vehicle collisions:

– Scan the road and shoulders ahead of you.

– Use high-beam headlights if there’s no oncoming traffic.

– If a collision is unavoidable, apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane.

– Be extra cautious at dawn and dusk.

– Slow down and use extra caution when traveling through areas with a high and active wildlife population.

– Drivers should always wear a seat belt and remain awake, alert and sober.

Fifty percent of deer crashes occur between the months of October through December, and seventy-nine percent happen between 5pm and 7am.

According to a 2020 report by the THP and Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security, deer-vehicle collisions cost Tennessee drivers over $90 million that year.
