SNAP: After Spending Holidays Hungry, Over 30,000 Tennesseans Face Months Longer Wait For Assistance

After spending the holidays hungry, well over 30,000 Tennesseans may have to wait months more to find out if they will receive help buying food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.  The Tennessee Department of Human Services blames the backlog on problems with a new computer system that was installed last June in addition to a staffing shortage.  Tennessee is required by law to approve or deny SNAP applications in 30 days but that hasn’t been happening since last summer.  TDHS reportedly hopes to have the problem resolved by mid-March.
