TN Bill Would Require Election Commission to Record Your Party Affiliation on Your Permanent Voting Registration Record

Republican lawmakers are pushing a bill that would make County Election Commissions record your party affiliation on your permanent voting registration record.

Currently in Tennessee, voters do not have to register with a political party to vote in a primary election.

This bill would require voters to vote in their affiliated party primary elections, “unless it is the first primary election the voter has participated in on or after the effective date of this act and the voter affiliates with a political party or is designated as “unaffiliated”.”  Such affiliation or designation must then be added to the voter’s permanent registration record.

The Senate version of the bill, SB2631, will be discussed in the State and Local Government Committee on March 27, 2024 at 2pm Central Time.
