During the monthly work session of the Crossville City Council on Tuesday, council members heard from City Attorney Randy York who outlined a Memorandum of Understanding with the YMCA to operate a proposed indoor recreation facility. According to York, the document would have to be approved by council, the recently formed Sports Authority and the YMCA. Once approved, York said action could then be taken to move forward on bonds for the project. It appeared that council will have the votes to approved the MOU at next weeks regular session. All council members voiced their opinion on the project with Rob Harrison stating he was in favor, but would like to have a referendum or at least some type of survey. Council Member Mike Turner noted that he was in favor of a referendum to decide the matter once and for all. Scot Shanks said he disagreed with have a referendum, saying the city had already gone too far to back out now. Mayor RJ Crawford added that the city was in a great position financially and that any referendum should have been done a long time ago, while Council Member Art Gernt said that Crossville can handle this and can pay for it very easily. Earlier this year the council approved the formation of a Sports Authority to operate and oversee the project, which would prevent the use of property tax revenue being used. Council will meet Tuesday, May 14th at 6PM in Crossville City Hall for their regular session.
