The Carter County Sheriff’s Office says an east Tennessee man and woman face child abuse and child endangerment charges after investigators serving a search warrant on their home on an unrelated case discovered evidence of child abuse.

Mikki Moody, age 36, and Sean David Moody, 39, both of Elizabethton, were booked into the Carter County Detention Center on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

Sheriff’s investigators and TBI agents reportedly found evidence that a non-verbal, autistic 7-year-old child was being locked in a storage trunk with food.  “The trunk contained urine-soaked blankets, a pillow, half-eaten pizza, and clothing that contained a substance consistent with blood,” Carter County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Preston White stated.

In addition to child abuse charges, Sean David Moody has been charged by the TBI with abuse of a vulnerable adult. They say the victim has developmental disability and is his older sister.  Mr. Moody reportedly served as her caregiver.

Mikki Moody was released from custody after posting a $75,000 bond.

The investigation into this case is ongoing at this time.

The charges and allegations referenced and obtained from press releases by the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and TBI, are are merely accusations of criminal conduct and not evidence. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
