The U.S. Department of Justice reports that Skyler Philippi, 24, of Columbia, Tennessee, was arrested earlier this month within minutes of attempting to destroy an energy facility in Nashville.
According to the DOJ, in July (2024), Philippi reportedly told someone about the impact of attacking large interstate electric substations. Officials say Philippi planned to fly a drone with explosives into the substation.
In September, Philippi allegedly drove with undercover employees (UCEs) of the FBI to an electric substation where he conducted reconnaissance. While driving, Philippi ordered explosives.
On Nov. 2, 2024, as Philippi and the undercover FBI employees were at the site of the planned attack, law enforcement moved in and arrested Philippi. He reportedly had the drone powered up and the explosive device was armed.
Philippi is charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted destruction of an energy facility. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
