A section of I-40 near the Tennessee/North Carolina border will remain closed longer than expected after another chunk of roadway fell into the Pigeon River Gorge last week.
North Carolina Department of Transportation crews and contractors initially focused on reopening the interstate the first week of January following severe damage from Hurricane Helene. The new damage will keep it closed until transportation and geotechnical engineers deem the area safe for drivers to be in a narrow, two-lane pattern in the gorge.
Motorists traveling to east Tennessee and North Carolina are reminded to check out road conditions at smartway.tn.gov and ncdot.gov.
