The TBI is investigating Monday night’s officer-involved shooting in southeast Tennessee. It occurred at a home on the 900 block of Smokey Branch Road in Vonore.
The preliminary investigation shows the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve warrants on a man who was wanted for domestic assault and violation of an order of protection. When deputies pulled into the driveway, the subject reportedly began firing a weapon striking a Sheriff’s Office patrol unit.
Deputies returned fire, striking the subject, who was airlifted to an area hospital where he is being treated.
One deputy sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene.
The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
