The North Carolina Department of Transportation on Saturday (March 1, 2025) announced that a 12-mile stretch of I-40 between North Carolina and Tennessee has re-opened, with one lane running in each direction. This is the first time this area has been open to traffic since it was washed out in several places in the Hurricane Helene floods last September. The speed limit through the narrow lanes has been lowered to 35 mph and traffic more than 8.5 ft in width is not allowed. Motorists should be prepared for slowed or stopped traffic and are encouraged to take alternate routes. The area continues to be an active work zone. It’s unclear how long it will take to fully repair the eastbound lanes.
