Cumberland County, TN — On April 2, 2025, a routine traffic stop conducted by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit resulted in two arrests, the recovery of a stolen firearm, and the seizure of approximately four ounces of suspected heroin.

At approximately 2:27 AM, Deputy Blake Richardson observed a Cadillac STS commit multiple lane violations while traveling eastbound on I-40. A registration check through dispatch revealed the vehicle was registered to an individual with an active warrant in Blount County. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the driver failed to stop immediately, prompting Deputy Richardson to engage both emergency lights and sirens before the vehicle ultimately came to a stop near Exit 317, adjacent to a gas station on Highway 127 North.

Upon contact, Deputy Richardson identified the driver as Jerry Crandall and the passenger as William Kirby. Both individuals failed to present valid driver’s licenses or proof of insurance. During the stop, Deputy Richardson observed several indicators of potential criminal activity including visible 9mm ammunition in the passenger door.  Crandall admitted to having a handgun in the trunk. A consensual search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded Springfield Armory 9mm pistol, later confirmed as stolen from Knox County. Additionally, Deputy Richardson located a glass pipe with residue indicative of narcotics use and Narcan inside the vehicle.

A subsequent search of Kirby resulted in the discovery of approximately 43 grams of a brown, rock-like substance believed to be heroin, concealed on his person. A further search of Crandall revealed two more bags of suspected heroin, totaling approximately 68 grams, hidden in his groin area.  A field test of suspected substances tested positive for heroin.

Both Crandall and Kirby were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Cumberland County Jail. All evidence was photographed, logged, and secured at the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. The suspected narcotics have been submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for further analysis. The recovered firearm will be returned to its rightful owner, pending verification.

The vehicle was inventoried and towed, with a hold placed for proof of ownership. (Photos courtesy CCSO.)
