6/18/25 8:15pm ET/7:15pm CT UPDATE: I-40 remains closed in both directions near the TN/NC line following flooding and a rockslide at MM 450 in Cocke County. All previously stuck traffic is now off the roadway. Crews are already working to clean up and evaluate the situation. However, with more rain in the forecast, that may hamper efforts. We will continue to post updates as available. Motorists wanting to access NC should take I-81 N to I-26 E or I-81 N to I-77 S in VA. Check smartway.tn.gov for the latest on the closure.
6/18/25 6:50 pm ET/5:50 pm CT: *URGENT* I-40 near the TN/NC border is *closed* due to flooding and rockslide at MM 450 in Cocke County. Geotechnical engineers are on their way to assess, and the barrier rail will be moved to allow stuck vehicles to turn around. Currently, I-40 and Waterville Road are flooded. Our HELP truck crews, TDOT operations crew members, and Tennessee Highway Patrol officers are assisting in getting drivers to safety. We will provide additional updates as they become available.
