The TBI says new evidence points to former McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser as the person who fatally shot his wife Pauline Mullins in 1967. At the time, Sheriff Pusser said he and his wife were both shot in an ambush as they were driving to a disturbance call. Pusser was portrayed as a crime-fighting hero in the 1973 movie “Walking Tall”, however, the TBI and the District Attorney General for the 25th Judicial District now think Pusser may have killed his wife and shot himself to cover up the crime. Buford Pusser died in a car accident in 1974 at the age of 36.
