High E. Coli Levels Detected in Pikeville’s Treated Wastewater

By Ronni Chase Sep 7, 2025 | 8:21 PM

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has ordered the Town of Pikeville to post signs at access points and boat ramps to the Sequatchie River warning people that the water could be contaminated with sewage.  This comes after high levels of E. coli were found in Pikeville’s treated wastewater.  The Town must also begin weekly sampling for E. coli in the Sequatchie River, upstream and downstream of the Pikeville Sewage Treatment Plant discharge point, and retain laboratory results for review.  TDEC has also mandated that Pikeville submit a written response to them by by September 19th ( 2025), detailing specific actions  taken to address the wastewater contamination.
