A new mussel species, the slabside pearly mussel, has been discovered in the Obed Wild & Scenic River during recent monitoring by the National Park Service. This finding indicates an important expansion of known habitat for the endangered species, which is rarely seen outside a few tributaries in the Tennessee River system. Finding a new, protected location is potentially important to the long-term recovery of this rare species. (Photo courtesy NPS)
