The Monterey Police Department has arrested Joel Patrick Welles for allegedly trying to cash a forged $5,000 check at area banks and businesses.

The check was written on his mother-in-law’s closed account.

Police say when they caught up to Welles at his residence, he ran into the house, slammed the front door and yelled that he had a gun and would drop them on the porch.

Officers were able to open the door and take Welles into custody following a brief struggle.

He was transported to the Putnam County Jail where he was booked on Forgery and Resisting Arrest with bond set at $16,600.

If you have any information or Mr. Welles attempted to cash the check with your business, please contact the Monterey Police Department at (931) 839-2323.
