After 32 years in office, Democratic Representative Jim Cooper of Tennessee will not seek reelection. “I cannot thank the people of Nashville enough. You backed me more than almost anyone in Tennessee history,” he said. Congressman Cooper blamed gerrymandering for his decision after Republican lawmakers passed a plan to divide Cooper’s Nashville-area district into three congressional districts. Cooper said he is promptly announcing his decision not to run so that others have more time to campaign. He also plans to return the individual contributions he has received for this race so that donors can redirect them as they choose.
