The body of a missing Florida woman was found Saturday evening (4/2/2022) in a shallow grave in a barn in Alabama. Her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child was arrested Friday (4/1/2022) in Lebanon, Tennessee by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said the suspect, Marcus Spanevelo, is being held in the Maury County Jail on charges of Tampering with Evidence, Giving False Information Concerning a Missing Persons Investigation, and Destruction of Evidence. Cassie Carli was last seen alive on March 27 in a parking lot of a beach bar and restaurant in Florida where she was supposed to pick up her daughter from Spanevelo during a custody exchange. Police say the child has been found safe. Additional charges are expected to be filed against Spanevelo pending the results on an autopsy of Carli’s body.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said Marcus Spanevelo has been uncooperative throughout the investigation and has “been acting like a dirtbag.” Sheriff Johnson said, “I think [Spanevelo] is going to spend the rest of his life in prison or he’s going to get the needle. Hopefully the needle.”
Sheriff Johnson said this also points out why all custody exchanges should be conducted in broad daylight, in a parking lot, like Walmart, with a lot of people.
The investigation is ongoing.
