It’s the end of an era for the “Eternal Flame” in the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. According to a post on the TWRA Facebook page, the “Eternal Flame” gas well, which some say has been burning since at least 1969, will be capped off and will be no more. Construction work on the gas well site is going on now and will continue through August 14, 2023. The section of the WMA known for the “Eternal Flame” will be closed for the reclamation project. The North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area spans Scott, Anderson, Campbell and Morgan Counties. The “Eternal Flame” in Scott County was a pipe sticking out of the ground with a steady supply of natural gas which produced a flame. For over 5 decades, the “Eternal Flame” has been a favorite camping, hiking and trail riding destination in the Royal Blue Unit. Thousands came just to see the famous flame, and now after more than 54 years, it’s being snuffed out. Signs on the site will show where area closures begin and gates will be installed to restrict road access. TWRA says the area will reopen once the project is complete but sadly without the “Eternal Flame”. Please contact the North Cumberland WMA office with any questions or concerns at 423-566-8557.
