The TBI is investigating after a historical building was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning in Grundy County. There were no reports of injuries. Sam’s Corner, also known as Sam’s Place, was a family restaurant and general store on Highway 56 and Phipps Street in Coalmont, Tennessee.
The Tennessee Historical Commission had designated it as a historical site with a marker that told the story of the Creighton & Sons General Store, which was established in the early 1900’s and owned and operated by three generations until 2012. It was a Sears building delivered to Coalmont on the “Mountain Goat” train and assembled on site.
The building was a target of arson twice in early April. Saturday it was burned down to the ground.
