The Chattanooga Police Department has identified Monday’s active shooter as 67-year-old John Schultz, who was an employee of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau.
According to a press release by the Department, Schultz was in an office building on Hamilton Place Boulevard around 2pm Monday and was observed by witnesses pointing a gun at multiple employees and pulling the trigger. The firearm malfunctioned and did not fire. The other employees were able to separate themselves and get away from the suspect. At some point during the incident, it appears that Shultz shot himself with a second firearm. He was found to be deceased on scene.
Police did not give a motive.
The Chattanooga Police Department says this is an active and ongoing investigation.
