In a Facebook post, 9th Judicial District Attorney General Russell Johnson reports that the man who was fatally shot by a Deputy in the Mossy Grove Community in Morgan County Friday morning (5/2/25) had threatened the officer with a rock.
Deputies responded to a 911 call at a home on Ray Cross Road for what appeared to be an unwanted subject that the homeowner was trying to remove from the home and otherwise restrain.
The first deputy on scene was reportedly confronted by the subject who was identified by the TBI as 28-year-old John A. Cox.
DAG Johnson reports that Mr. Cox picked up a large rock and came after the Deputy who shot multiple times. The Deputy then began CPR and other live-saving measures. Cox was transported to Roane Medical Center and pronounced deceased by the medical examiner.
