Updated at 6:18pm 8/13/25 to reflect that the missing man was found deceased.
At least four people died due to Tuesday’s floods in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Wednesday morning two adults and a child were killed when a tree fell on their car. Wednesday afternoon the Chattanooga Fire Department announced that the body of a missing man was recovered.
A Local State of Emergency was issued by the Mayor of Hamilton County due to Tuesday’s flash floods that shut down a section of I-24, stranded motorists, and prompted rescues across the area. Tuesday night Sheriff Austin Garrett asked people to avoid driving so they would not put themselves at risk but also so they would not hinder crews responding to flood emergencies across Hamilton County, including Hamilton Place, Brainerd, East Brainerd, East Ridge, and the Interstates. The Sheriff’s Office has also posted a list of roads to avoid on Facebook. People traveling through Hamilton County should use extreme caution.
