The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam targeting family members of individuals who are currently incarcerated. The scammers claim to work for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and tell the victims their family member will be released from jail if they pay a certain amount of money over Apple Pay, Cash App, Bitcoin, or Venmo. THIS IS A SCAM.
Some reminders to avoid scams:
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you asking for money or to bond someone out of jail over the phone.
A bondsman will NEVER contact you first, you must first contact them.
NEVER give out any personal information or bank account information over the phone.
If you receive a call from an unknown number asking for money, immediately hang up.
Always call us at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office you have been contacted by someone asking for money.
