The new I-55 Bridge over the Mississippi River will be named Kings’ Crossing in honor of three transformative figures known as “Kings”: B.B. King; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Elvis Presley.
The existing bridge, which has served travelers for 75 years since its construction, will be replaced with a larger structure designed to accommodate significantly more traffic and also meet modern safety and seismic codes, as it sits on the New Madrid fault line.
Construction on the I-55 Bridge Replacement project should begin in 2026 with completion in 2031. Current cost estimates are around $900 million.
