The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an active phone scam targeting our community.

Several citizens have reported receiving phone calls from a man falsely claiming to be “Sgt. Zach Ellis of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Civil Warrant Division.”  The Sheriff’s Office does not have an employee named Zach Ellis.

There have also been reports of individuals calling using “real names” of employees of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.   The scammers then urge you to call a “private line”.

These callers are NOT affiliated with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Important Facts to Know:

  • The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office will NOT call you demanding payment for civil warrants, missed court dates, fines, or fees.
  • The Sheriff’s Office will never request payment over the phone, by gift cards, prepaid cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
  • Caller ID can be spoofed to appear as a legitimate law enforcement number.

If you receive this call hang up the phone immediately and do not share ANY information with the caller.  Please warn your family and friends about this scam.  Some people have already lost money.
