Putnam County Fire Department Release:
The Putnam County Fire Department responded to a reported tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 40 eastbound near mile marker 298 at approximately 9:15 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews found the cab of the truck fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the initial fire under control; however, it was soon determined that the fire had spread to the trailer and ignited its contents.
Additional agencies responding to the scene included TDOT, Putnam Rescue, and Putnam County Emergency Management.
Crews remained on scene for several hours working to extinguish the fire completely, resulting in major traffic delays as the interstate was shut down for most of the incident.
No injuries were reported. The tractor, trailer, and its cargo—identified as medical towels—are considered a total loss. (Photos courtesy Putnam County Fire Department)
