Two people face child abuse charges in Monterey.
According to a press release, on Friday, June 26, 2026, Officers with the Monterey Police Department responded to a residence for an unresponsive female. She had no pulse and was not breathing. Officers administered Narcan and the female regained a pulse and began breathing on her own. EMS arrived and continued to care for her.
Officers discovered that Mary Kathryne Swafford and Cameron Shane Clegg had been using Fentanyl.
As officers were giving life-saving care to Swafford, they say Mr. Clegg attempted to hide drug paraphernalia under a mattress where a small child was sitting.
A search revealed multiple items of paraphernalia and items with drug residue.
DCS responded to the residence and the child was removed from the home and placed in the care of another individual.
Both Clegg and Swafford were charged with Child Abuse and Mr. Clegg was also charged with Tampering with Evidence. (Photos courtesy Monterey Police Department)
