At least 22 people are dead and 20 are missing following Saturday’s flooding in Humphreys County, the deadliest flood event in Middle Tennessee history. Two of the deceased were 7-month old twins who were swept from their father’s arms. Hundreds were impacted after the storms dumped between 10 to 12 inches of rain in just six hours in some areas. As of 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the McEwen TVA rain gauge had reported 17.02 inches of rain since midnight, according to the National Weather Service. The catastrophic floods destroyed homes, cars, roads and caused landslides. Rescue efforts were hampered by widespread power outages and lack of cell phone service. In the cities of Waverly and McEwen people were trapped in their homes with no way to get out. Tennessee declared a State of Emergency and shelters were opened in Humphreys, Hickman and Dickson counties. Rescue crews continued to search for victims Monday.
